Understanding the UL94 VTM-0 rating — and how to choose flame-retardant labels for batteries, harnesses, PCBs and more.
As electric vehicles, energy storage systems, industrial electronics, and data centers continue to evolve, product safety requirements are becoming more demanding. In addition to batteries, plastics, and insulation materials, label materials are increasingly recognized as an important part of product safety design.
UL94 is the internationally recognized flammability standard for plastic materials. For thin and flexible materials such as labels and films, the VTM (Vertical Thin Material) classification is used, with VTM-0 representing the highest flame-retardant rating, followed by VTM-1 and VTM-2. To achieve a VTM-0 rating, a material must self-extinguish quickly, produce no flaming drips, and limit flame propagation during standardized vertical burn testing.
Although labels are small components, they are commonly applied to battery packs, wire harnesses, PCBs, connectors, and other critical assemblies. If the label construction is combustible, it can contribute to flame spread and compromise long-term product identification and traceability.
It is also important to understand that heat resistance is not the same as flame retardancy. Heat-resistant materials are designed to withstand elevated temperatures during normal operation, while flame-retardant materials are engineered to self-extinguish and reduce flame propagation when exposed to fire. Many high-safety applications require both characteristics.
When selecting a flame-retardant label material, engineers should consider more than just the UL94 VTM-0 rating. Temperature resistance, chemical durability, printability, adhesive performance, and the actual operating environment should all be evaluated to ensure reliable identification throughout the product lifecycle.
